To cancel your Shopify subscription, log in as the store owner, go to Settings > Plan, click Cancel plan, choose "Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps", give a reason, and confirm with your password. If you bought a product subscription from a Shopify store, cancel it from your account on that store instead.
People search for this phrase for two different reasons. Most are merchants who want to stop paying Shopify for their store. Others are shoppers who subscribed to coffee, vitamins or skincare from a store that runs on Shopify and want to stop the deliveries. The steps are completely different, so start with the table below and jump to the section that fits.
| What you want to stop | Who you are | Where to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Your Shopify plan (the monthly bill for your store) | Store owner | Shopify admin: Settings > Plan > Cancel plan |
| Your Shopify plan, but only for a while | Store owner | Settings > Plan > Cancel plan > Pause and build |
| A paid app on your store | Merchant or staff with app permissions | Settings > Apps, open the app, uninstall it |
| A product subscription you bought from a store | Shopper | Your customer account on that store's website, or the "Manage subscription" link in your emails |
How to cancel your Shopify plan (store owners)
Cancelling your plan deactivates your store. Only the store owner can do it, and you need access to the owner account's two-step authentication. Stores on Shopify Plus cannot cancel from the admin; they have to contact Shopify Plus Support. Everyone else can cancel in a few minutes.
Before you cancel
- Export what you want to keep: products, customers and orders as CSV files, plus a copy of your theme.
- Fulfil, refund or close any open orders, and deal with outstanding gift cards and chargebacks.
- Check your domains. A domain bought through Shopify keeps renewing unless you transfer it, and a custom domain will disconnect from the store.
- Expect every app to be uninstalled. Shopify removes all apps when you cancel, and any pending app charges still appear on your final bill.
- If you sell subscriptions, tell your subscribers first. Once the store is closed, their renewals stop.
Steps on desktop
- Log in to your Shopify admin as the store owner.
- Go to Settings > Plan.
- Click Cancel plan. If you are still on a free trial, the button says Cancel trial.
- Shopify may show alternatives, such as a cheaper plan or the Pause and build plan. Skip them if you want to close the store.
- Review your domains and pending charges, then select "Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps" and click Continue.
- Choose a reason for leaving, add a comment if you like, and click Continue.
- Optionally tick "Save payment details to reopen your store faster".
- Enter your password and click Cancel plan (or Cancel trial) to confirm.
Steps in the Shopify mobile app
- Open the Shopify app and log in as the store owner.
- Tap the menu icon, then Settings.
- Tap Plan, then Cancel plan (or Cancel trial).
- Review the options and your domains, select "Cancel my plan and uninstall all apps", and tap Continue.
- Pick a reason, tap Continue, then enter your password and confirm.
What happens after you cancel
Shopify sends a confirmation email. You keep admin access until the end of your current billing cycle, then the store closes. Shopify says it keeps your store information for 2 years, so you can come back within that window. Keep the confirmation email as proof of the date you cancelled.
How to pause your Shopify subscription instead
If you only need a break, for a rebrand, a slow season or time away, pausing is usually better than cancelling. Shopify's Pause and build plan keeps your admin, products and theme in place for a reduced monthly fee. Shopify shows the current price on the plan page.
You can use it if you are the store owner, your free trial has ended, you are on a paid plan, and you are not on Shopify Plus.
- Log in as the store owner and go to Settings > Plan.
- Click Cancel plan and enter your password.
- Click Cancel plan again to see your options.
- Select Pause and build.
- Review the details and click Switch to Pause and build.
The switch takes effect at the end of your current billing cycle. While paused, checkout is turned off on every sales channel, including Point of Sale, so customers can browse but cannot buy. Discounts, gift cards and abandoned checkout recovery stop too. You can still edit products and see basic reports.
If you sell subscriptions, check with your subscription app what happens to renewals while checkout is off, and tell your subscribers before you switch. It is usually cleaner to pause their subscriptions on your side first than to let renewals fail.
How to reopen a paused or cancelled Shopify store
- Log in as the store owner.
- Go to Settings > Plan.
- For a cancelled store, click Reactivate plan. For a paused store, click Pick a plan.
- Choose a plan and confirm your payment details.
- Remove the storefront password if you set one, and reconnect any custom domain.
When you reopen a paused store, your old plan is no longer available, so you pick from the current plans.
How to cancel a Shopify app subscription
Paid apps are billed on your Shopify invoice. There is no separate cancel form: uninstalling the app is how you cancel it.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Apps.
- Click the app you want to remove to open its page.
- Click the menu icon (three dots) and choose Uninstall.
- Confirm the uninstall.
Charges that have already built up can still appear on your next bill. For refunds or disputes about a third-party app, Shopify sends you to the app developer, so contact them directly. Before you uninstall, export anything the app holds, like reviews, loyalty balances or email templates.
Be careful with subscription apps. On Shopify, the subscription app is what triggers each renewal charge. If you uninstall it, your customers' renewals stop even though their subscriptions still exist. If you are switching apps, migrate the subscriptions to the new app first and turn billing on there before you remove the old one. SubzWallet's migration is free on every plan and keeps saved cards in Shopify, so customers do not re-enter their payment details. See migrating from Recharge.
How to cancel a subscription you bought from a Shopify store (shoppers)
If you subscribe to a product from a store that uses Shopify, your subscription is with that store, not with Shopify. Shopify cannot see or cancel it for you. The store manages it through its subscription app, and you cancel it from your account on the store's website.
Here are the steps for stores that use the Shopify Subscriptions app. Most other subscription apps work in a similar way.
- Go to the store's website and click the account or sign-in icon. Or open any order email from the store and click "Manage your subscription".
- Enter the email address you used when you ordered. The store sends you a 6-digit code; type it in. You do not need a password.
- Open the Subscriptions tab.
- Select the subscription you want to end.
- Choose Cancel subscription and confirm.
Shopify's help center points out that cancelling cannot be undone. If you only need a break, look for Pause or Skip on the same screen. Pausing stops charges and deliveries until you resume, and skipping drops just the next order. Stores on the Shopify Subscriptions app also send a reminder email 3 days before each charge, which is a good moment to make changes.
If you cannot find a cancel button
- Search your inbox for the store's order confirmation and look for a "Manage subscription" link.
- Make sure you are signed in with the same email you used to subscribe.
- Some stores only offer pause or skip in the account and handle cancellations by email. Contact the store and ask them to cancel; they can do it from their admin.
- Still being charged after you cancelled? Contact the store first with your order number. Your card issuer is the last resort.
If you run subscriptions on your store: let customers cancel, pause or skip
Many of the people searching how to cancel a Shopify subscription are your own customers looking for the exit. If they cannot find it, they do not stay. They email support, dispute the charge with their bank, or leave a bad review. Hiding the cancel button turns a cancellation into a chargeback.
A better approach is to make every option easy to find and to put the softer options first. A good self-service setup looks like this:
- A clear "Manage subscription" link in every order and renewal email.
- A customer portal that works on a phone, where customers can skip an order, move the next order date, change frequency or swap a product without contacting you.
- A cancel flow that asks why the customer is leaving and offers one matching alternative: skip or a longer interval for "too much product", a pause for "taking a break", a swap for "want something different".
- A clean final confirmation if they still want to leave, with no extra hoops.
SubzWallet covers this with a mobile-first customer portal and a cancel flow that can offer pause, skip, swap, a frequency change or a retention offer before the final step. Cancellation analytics record the reasons, so you can see why people leave. If you want the full list of retention tactics, read our guide on how to reduce customer churn.

Frequently asked questions
How do I stop automatic payments on Shopify?
If you are a merchant, cancel your plan in Settings > Plan; Shopify stops billing at the end of the current cycle. To stop a single app charge, uninstall that app from Settings > Apps. If you are a shopper paying for a product subscription, cancel or pause it from your account on the store's website. Shopify does not control that payment; the store does.
Why won't Shopify let me cancel my plan?
The most common reasons: you are not logged in as the store owner (staff accounts cannot cancel), you cannot complete the owner account's two-step authentication, or the store is on Shopify Plus, which has to be cancelled through Shopify Plus Support. Log in as the owner and go to Settings > Plan to try again.
Can I cancel my Shopify plan at any time?
Yes. You can cancel from Settings > Plan whenever you like, including during a free trial (the button then says Cancel trial). You keep admin access until the end of the billing cycle, and any pending charges, including app charges, appear on your final bill.
How do I pause my Shopify subscription instead of cancelling?
Go to Settings > Plan, click Cancel plan, enter your password, click Cancel plan again and choose Pause and build. You must be the store owner on a paid plan, past your free trial and not on Shopify Plus. Checkout is turned off while paused, and you reopen by picking a new plan.
What happens to my store data after I cancel Shopify?
Shopify says it keeps your store information for 2 years after deactivation, and you can reactivate from Settings > Plan within that time. Custom domains disconnect and need to be reconnected if you come back. Export your products, customers and orders before you cancel so you are not relying on that window.
